'My heart says keep her keep her': Rescue kitten shows up at pawrent's door, leaving them torn between keeping her with their resident cat or finding her a new furever home

A five-week-old adventure kitty decided to show up meowing at someone's front door, ready to pounce right into their heart. Of course, this pawrent couldn't turn away those big eyes and tiny paws so now, the house has two tails in the tale. 

The new kitten is playful, cuddly, and full of pawtential, but there's one little snag: the resident senior queen, who has ruled her kingdom solo for 11 years, is not amused. Growls, hisses, and strategic avoidance have become her daily routine, while the kitten happily camps out in the spare room.

The pawrent is torn between wanting to keep this little fluffball fur-ever and worrying about kitty politics, sleep schedules, and fairness. After all, senior cats can be finicky about feline roommates, and nobody wants a midnight zoomies marathon waking them up.

It's a classic cat conundrum: heart vs. head. But one thing's fur sure. This little adventurer already found a safe landing spot. Whether she stays or finds another purrfect home, love is at the center of this pawsitively complicated decision.

    1. My beautiful senior kitty (almost 15) has been the single cat for 11 years with me and does not like other cats. She hisses and growls at the kitten and avoids her. I do not want to stress my cat out but otherwise she seems good and affectionate with me, eating. and chilling when the kitten is in the spare room.

    2. This kitten will get bigger. I work quite a bit and am wondering what the logistics of leaving the two together while I'm out will be. It's really hard to predict how this will go.

    3. My sleep is extremely important to me. I suffer from several minor health issues and if I don't sleep properly I am not a human being. For now the kitten is in the spare room at night and my cat sleeps with me

    (who I've trained to not bother me at night). But I don't know if as she grows it will be fair to keep her in a spare room at night. I would supply her with entertainment but there's just no way I can deal with a young high energy cat disturbing my sleep.

    I feel like as much as I love her, the best thing would be to find a loving home for her. But where I live people are not as caring about cats as I would like them to be and my heart aches thinking of where she may end up. I love this little thing. What would you do in my situation? Thanks for any advice.

  • If you feel like you can’t keep her long-term, the best thing to do is find a caring hooman who can give her the love and attention she deserves.

    Cheshirecatslave15 Keep her. I've 5 cats and they've coped with the new arrivals. I don't have good health but they rarely wake me and are a comfort. I had a 17 year old cat who got a new lease of life from a kitten.

    Pure-Chemistry3710 I would keep her. It takes some time for cats to adjust to each other even if they are super social. Having another kitten around for my older cat was the best decision for me. I also work a lot which is why it was important for my cat to have company.

    As for sleep- we have a cat room (hint hint - it's not for the cats). But even so we can shut our door since we no longer have a door scratcher cat in the house. Either of these options can provide you good sleep. If it were me, I would take this as a sign.

    The last thing I would ask that I don't think you mentioned- can you financially support two? If so, then yeah that kitty is the universe giving you some good

  • If you can figure out the sleep situation, having two cats can actually be a pawsitive thing. Built-in companionship for them and double the love (and mischief) for you.

    vampkill I got my kitten when my cat was 17, he was always the only cat. I was really worried and felt guilty to begin with but I did lots of research on introducing them and went from there. 5 months later, they fight and then cuddle right after! I've also noticed my older cat meows a lot less now because his little friend runs up to him

    immediately lol. I think you just have to play it by ear, you know your cat best. Most cats are standoffish at first, if it doesn't improve then I would find another home for your kitten. If your cats get along, I've found no issue with leaving mine alone- again, you just have to play it by ear. I hope this all works out for you!

    RosalitaF Keep her! I'm going through a similar situation now. I'm 3 days in to adopting a new kitten, my older cats were very territorial initially, yowling and hissing at her. Every day I'm seeing little improvements. I keep giving.

    them time without her then having her around. The gradual introducing is working well, you just need to keep giving them all loves and putting their scent on each other. The cat distribution system found you, sounds like she's for you :-)

  • It might take some patience and slow introductions, but most cats eventually warm up to each other. Soon enough they’ll be sharing sunbeams and snacks like lifelong furriends.

    koshawk Look here the kitten delivery system does not make mistakes. Being owned by cats for over 60 years. I have never had to go somewhere to adopt a cat. They have always just showed up. What's done is done accept it.

    AuntieClaire I would say you have been chosen. Kitten feels comfortable with you. And your cat will grow to accept her. Just give it some time and see what happens. You don't have to make a quick or rash decision.
